On Tuesday evening, the Austrian Severe Weather Center (UWZ) issued a red warning to the public. A “severe storm with gusts of up to 100 km/h is expected. The warning initially “only” applies to Vienna-Favoriten. However, it is likely that other parts of eastern Austria will also be affected.
The time for the expected squalls is Wednesday from 11:00 to 19:00. “From Wednesday morning to Wednesday evening, the wind, which is shifting from west to northwest, will reach gale force at times. Peak gusts of 80 to 100 km/h are to be expected, especially in open and exposed areas,” it says in a press release.
“These are possible effects that may vary from weather situation to weather situation,” the weather experts state in the statement.
On Wednesday, it will initially rain in the north and north-east before temporarily drying out in the morning. However, the northern side of the Alps will only see a brief respite before showers return from the Mühlviertel in the latter half of the day. It will remain mostly dry in the south, with occasional sunshine, most likely from the Lienz to Graz basin. The westerly wind will freshen up to gale force in the north and east, and it will also be windy in some valleys. Temperatures will rise to 6 to 14 degrees.
